The Algorithm Doesn’t Know Me! Job Postings Keep Missing the Mark

I’m an accountant, have worked as on for years, and still want to be one.

I’m on the hunt for a new job. Searching for a nw position is almost a full-time job itself, but doing it online makes the process easier. I remember the old, exhausting days of pounding the pavement, so this is one technological advance I appreciate.

For most job applications I can upload my resume, which I labored for weeks to recreate, answer a few questions about eligibility to work in the United States, and click an “apply” button. Almost gone are cover letters, thank goodness.

I’m not sure what algorithms are at work, or what I may have done to stir some strays. I get plenty of postings for accounting jobs, but I get equally as many from left field that have nothing to do with my experience. What, on my resume could have sparked these?

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist; Car Cleaner at the Airport; Bus Driver, Cook at a Senior Citizen Residential Facility; Entry Level Border Patrol Agent, Radiology Technologist. And the best: Wood Truss Designer. I have nothing to offer any of these jobs.

Then there are the job listings I receive only to see that, beyond the job title , the descriptions and requirements are blurred. These listings are “for Premium Members only,” meaning I would have to pay to see them and pay to apply. No thanks.

I look through every posting I receive. I’d hate to think that between Wood Truss Designer and Border Patrol Agent I missed my perfect accounting opportunity!
